Gun Laws

All gun laws are written with the foundation of the United States Constitution's Second Amendment:

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Gun Safety With Children

Children and teens are naturally curious about firearms and, as a result, may be tempted to "play" with a firearm they find. Make sure young people in your home are aware of and understand these safety guidelines:

  1. Don't go snooping, or allow other kids to go snooping, for guns in the house.
  2. If you find a gun in your house, or anywhere else, STOP! Do not touch it or allow anyone else to. Leave the area and be sure to immediately tell an adult.
  3. Even if a gun looks like a toy, don't touch it. Some real guns look like toy guns, so don't take a chance. Leave the area and immediately tell an adult.

How to Respond to Shots Fired:

Unfortunately "shots fired" is something that every community has now experienced. While most cases in the City of Columbus end of being gang or domestic related, they can still be extremely dangerous to the public. The 270 Sniper paralyzed parts of the city as everyone asked who and when, but had nothing to go on to help keep them safe. Recent school, work and mall shootings have left people asking how do we prevent, react and respond.

Some feel that we should restrict gun rights, while others feel the need to arm themselves in the event there is a threat. So which is right? While we all have our personal beliefs, we don’t know. What we do know is that people everywhere are scared and most of the time, they don’t know what to do if they hear gunshots. So, we want to make sure you understand how to protect yourself and your family.

At Home:

  • The first thing you need to do when shots are fired and you know you in the immediate area, is protect yourself and your family.
  • Seek shelter in a basement or inside room, get as far away from windows, doors and outside walls.
  • If yours or anyone else's life is still in danger, immediately call 911.  If you know the threat is gone, contact the local law enforcement agency for your area.  Within the TBW community, you will want to contact the Columbus Police Department at 614-645-4545.
  • Try to give as much information to the dispatcher as possible.
  • Make sure to give them your location and the direction the shots came from.
  • Let them know how close you think you are to the shots and if there are other people around.

In a Public Place:

  • Put as many walls or furniture between you and the shooter. The more items a bullet has to go through, the better your chances are that those items will stop or slow down the bullet.
  • Call 911.
  • Try to give as much information to the dispatcher as possible.
  • Make sure to give them your location and the direction the shots came from.
  • Let them know how close you think you are to the shots and if there are other people around.
  • Are there hostages that you know of?
  • Do not put yourself in danger by trying to look outside your shelter for more details.
  • Stay on the phone with the dispatcher and do not come out of your shelter area until you are given the okay to do so.

Shots Fired in the Distance:

  • Stay/go inside
  • Contact the local law enforcement agency for your area. Within the TBW community, you will want to contact the Columbus Police Department at 614-645-4545.
  • Give them your location and the direction you think the shots came from.
  • Call CPD back if you notice anything else suspicious or if there are additional shots fired.
  • If the shots sound as though they are getting closer, please refer to the first section and don’t go back outside until you receive the okay to do so. Remember that you can always call the dispatcher back to make sure the area was cleared by CPD.
