Natural Gas
Identifying Natural Gas:
- The natural gas delivered to your home or business has a distinctive odor. This odor can alert you to the smallest amount of gas leaking in or around the building. If you have a gas stove, you can some times smell the gas when you light a burner. While we don't encourage you to smell this gas, being able to identify it is extremely important.
- If you have never smelled natural gas, contact Columbia Gas of Ohio for a brochure that has a scratch and sniff flame that releases the smell of natural gas.
- Look for a white cloud, mist or fog
- Listen for a hissing or whistling
- Always call before you dig. It is a law to have buried utility lines marked before you dig and this will help prevent any damage to natural gas lines. Use either 811 or 1-800-362-2764 at least two full days before you dig to allow enough time for buried utility lines to be marked.
If you detect a gas leak:
- Leave the building immediately. Additional activities, even those that just produce static electricity can be enough to cause an explosion.
- Do not light matches or use lighters
- Do not touch any electrical equipment or switches
- Do not try to open windows
- Do not use your home phone or cell phone before you leave the home.
- Call Columbia Gas at 1-800-344-4077 and select option 2, but only do this from a nearby phone or your cell phone once you are away from the building.
- If you do not have the number for Columbia Gas, call the fire department or 911.
- Wait from a safe location for the fire department of the Columbia Gas service person before re-entering the building.
