History of Courts/No Parking Signs: Dewbourne, Earlington, Stockton, Tildon & Yorkdale

  • 5/20/08 Follow Up:  As of Friday May 16, 2008 five "No parking" signs have been installed in each court. Additional information pertaining to only these signs can be found under "No Parking Signs on Dewbourne, Earlington, Stockton, Tildon & Yorkdale"
  • 4/28/08 Follow Up:  The signs have been approved! Their locations have been marked and the signs are being made and should be in shortly. Transportation determined that the courts were never meant to have been parking areas, but merely a turn around for emergency vehicles. Therefore there will be "no parking" in the courts at any time. Since many individuals who frequent the park live in the area, this will not affect you too much. However for those who wish to drive to the park, you will simply need to park on the street connecting to the park. This will drastically cut down on unwanted vehicles congregating in these areas.
  • 4/17/08 Follow Up:  At this time our petition to close the courts at the same time the park is closed, is being reviewed by the city's Transportation Department and we have been told that they will be back in touch with us by April 25, 2008.
  • Original Message: Following the March 12, 2008 meeting between Independence Village residents and the City of Columbus city officials, we began the process to petition the City of Columbus, Ohio’s Parks and Recreation to both improve the lighting and to change and post the hours of operation for Independence Park, located at 3075 Arrowsmith Drive in Columbus, Ohio 43068. In addition, we petitioned the City of Columbus, Ohio’s Transportation Department to change and post the hours of permitted parking for the courts located on Tildon Ln., Stockton Ln., Yorkdale Ln., Earlington Ln., and Dewbourne Dr. and that are situated next to Independence Park, located at 3075 Arrowsmith Drive in Columbus, Ohio 43068 to reflect the hours of operation being requested for Independence Park of dawn to one hour after dusk.  Click to see the Complete Letter

Change in Hours of Operation

  • 10/9/08: All signs indicating the new hours of operation for the park are posted at this time and are being enforced. Anyone on the property after dark is subject to arrest for trespassing.
  • 8/6/08: All signs indicating the new hours of operation for the park, except for one, are posted at this time. The old signs have been removed so there is no reason that anyone should be in the park after dark. If they are, call CPD at 645-4545.
  • 5/20/08: As of 5/20/08 the new signs "Closed from Dusk till Dawn" have been installed!
  • 4/28/08: We have been advised at this time that our request for the change in hours has been approved! We hope to have the signs indicating the new hours up in the upcoming weeks.
  • 4/17/08 Follow Up: We are waiting for either an approval letter or denial letter from the Parks and Recs department for the change in hours of operation and the additional lighting. Once that is received, everyone will be notified.

Barricades History

  • 5/20/08: Parks and recs are still waiting for adequate ground conditions in order to place the barricades in the ground. Once we know more, we will let you know.
  • 4/28/08: The barricades will be placed in the ground, to prevent individuals from driving through the park, as soon as the ground is stable enough to secure them.

Lighting History

  • Fall 2009 Update:  We are happy to report that after the approval of our grant funds, the appropriate steps were taken and additional lights have been successfully installed in Independence Park.

                    Independence Park Lighting

  • Fall 2008 Update:  We are looking into possible grants to help fund the lighting in the park. In the mean time we are going to be working with the residents whose homes either back up to or are next to the park, to have motion sensor lights installed on their homes. Because of funding restrictions, we may not be able to get the lighting needed in the park so having the lights on each or every other house will not only help the home owner feel more comfortable, but it will also help light certain areas of the park too.  Other options to keep an eye on the park are being explored too. We are looking into mounted patrol, undercover officers and block watch members to help with the issues.

Groveport Madison Property History

Updated on Tuesday, 29 December 2009

  • Authorization Letter - Please review the attached letter authorizing the Columbus Police Department to remove any individuals involved in criminal activities on this property.
  • In addition, the signs are in and are going to be placed throughout the property stating “no trespassing from dusk till dawn” so that the hours will directly mirror those of Independence Park
  • Overgrowth of shrubs/trees. We have spoken with the Superintendent of Groveport Madison School District and they are on board with whatever needs to be done to make sure that the area is taken care and any unnecessary grass and brush are taken care of. The land has been evaluated and any trees, shrubs or brush that is in a position that allows individuals to sit, drive through and conduct illegal activities without being seen, is going to be removed.
